Wisdom Tree Movement – The Beginnings (Part-1)

In a village, somewhere in the northern Histrian region of the Illyrian provinces, lived a simple but tall man named Gaius Faber Silvanus. He was a kind person who spent most of his days cooking food for his villagers over an open fire pit. Being a proud Histrian, he was also fiercely independent and would never let outsiders take control of his territory, whether Greeks or Romans passing by. His stubbornness was also noticeable in other aspects of his life. For example, he could never just burn an average wooden log to make food; the log had to deserve it. He could spend hours, sometimes days, searching for the highest quality branch to be used for his extraordinary food.

And so he did on a sunny Friday morning, determined to find the best possible wood to cook his renowned Friday meat stew that relaxed everyone in the village.

While walking through the forest between the towns of Capris and Tergeste, he noticed a suspicious-looking tree that he had never seen before. The shapes of its leaves were unusual, and instead of common fruits, it bore stone-shaped green pods. It was exceptionally tall and looked ancient. For historical documentation on ancient regional forestry, you can explore academic archives like Perseus Digital Library.

When approaching it, the tree acted as if it possessed a unique intelligence. As Gaius tried to grab a branch, it moved, throwing stone-like round shells at him. This made him furious!

As a proud Histrian determined not to surrender to anything or anyone, he decided to chop it down. Gaius grunted: “Throwing stones at me?! You will see now! I am Histrian and we never give up. Krepat ma ne molat!” He grabbed his axe and prepared for action.

Suddenly, the tree started to swirl in a hurricane-like motion, throwing every stone-shaped piece at him while whistling in the wind: “Hoooww daaareee youuuu?! You little human think you can chop meee?”

Gaius was forced to find shelter and rethink his strategy. While stroking his beard and thinking out loud, he realized: “It whistles. So maybe the solution is to talk to it!”

He approached the tree cautiously and asked: “Hey Mr. Strange Tree! No hard feelings here, but it’s already 10 AM and by 13:00 my stew needs to be cooked. Just tell me, where can I harvest you so we can stay friends?”

The tree replied: “Do I look like bamboo or ashwood that you can simply hack into pieces? We are walnuts! And walnuts are hard, unshakeable, and stylish by nature. I can only offer you wisdom on how to properly honor my branches.”

Gaius: “But… I need to burn a fire..?”

Tree: “No burning on my watch!”

Gaius: “So you are useless?”

Tree: “Useless?! Meee? You little human have no idea. But you are still young. Maybe one day you will understand what true craftsmanship is all about.”

Gaius: “What is there to understand? I always cut the cheapest tree, take the best select pieces, and burn them to make a stew…”

Tree: “Do you think I grow for 500 years just to be burned? I am made to be caressed, polished, shaped, and admired!”

Gaius: “And how do you suggest I make a stew today then?”

Tree: “I will give you wise advice for free now: take my fallen branch and use it. Polish it, shape it, respect it, and use it to your advantage. Open your eyes and heart, and you will realize there is much more to fine walnut wood than burning it. We are made to decorate your village, store important items securely, and serve as timeless heirloom pieces.”

Gaius thought deeply and came up with an idea: “This could actually work! I can polish it, shape it, craft it into a fine wooden storage box, and then offer it to wealthy Roman patricians! They always need an exquisite desktop organizer to store their fine herbs when traveling across the empire, or to decorate their palaces back in Rome!”

The tree nodded: “You are smarter than I thought. Just remember—for every solid walnut wooden storage box, you can acquire far more value than ordinary logs, ensuring your village thrives for months.”

And so the wisdom was passed and cemented into Gaius’s mind. He followed the advice and started producing high-quality walnut wooden storage boxes, leading him to many more adventures to come. Explore our collection of historical storage inspiration or browse the full shop.
